Qualifications: Bachelor of Speech Pathology (Honours Class 1), University of Queensland, 2007.
My career has taken me on some exciting journeys, and before establishing Boost Therapy in 2012, I worked in both Roma and Mount Isa. I loved working in the country, where the strong sense of community made family-focused therapy all the more important. I have also worked for Queensland Health in a program that worked with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to help improve children’s hearing health.
I have special interests in working with children with literacy or learning difficulties and children with speech sound difficulties, though I enjoy and strive to continually update my skills across all areas of children’s speech pathology, including language, stuttering, and working with children with Autism or a disability. As my team all know, I am very passionate about evidence-based practice and ensuring that the intervention we facilitate and recommend is based on robust research.
Since establishing Boost Therapy, I continue to be inspired by the families that we work with, who are so dedicated to supporting their children. There is nothing more rewarding than watching a child blossom while their proud family looks on. I am currently taking a break from working with clients due to the pending arrival of my second child, but am busily engaged in co-directing Boost Therapy and supporting our staff to continue doing the great job that they do.
Kate holds certifications in the following therapy programs and techniques, but uses a combination of modern, research-based approaches when working with children, to suit each individual’s needs:
Hanen – It Takes Two to Talk Program for young children with language delays or who are late to talk and understand.
Hanen – More Than Words Program for young children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) Level 1 – for people who have difficulty communicating with spoken words.
