Qualifications: Bachelor of Speech Pathology (Honours), The University of Newcastle; Bachelor of Nursing, Queensland University of Technology
Since becoming a Speech Pathologist I have been lucky enough to work in both metropolitan and regional areas. Prior to joining Boost, I worked primarily with children with a disability (including Autism Spectrum Disorder) and their families, as well as children from complex backgrounds ranging from birth to 12 who require assistance with communication (both oral communication and Alternative and Augmentative Communication), literacy and feeding. I enjoy working with children in their natural setting and involving their families so that communication and functioning can be optimised as much as possible in day to day environments.
Over the course of my career, I have developed a special interest in feeding/mealtimes and with Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC). However, I constantly seek to develop my skills in all areas so that I can provide the most effective therapy support. I am looking forward to undergoing training with Hanen’s “More Than Words” workshop in June (for working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder or Social Communication Disorder), and also in more instrumental feeding evaluation methods in August.
I enjoy providing functional and fun, evidence-based therapy to support the ongoing communication and feeding development of the children (and their families) I see professionally.
Gemma holds certifications in the following therapy programs and techniques, but uses a combination of modern, research-based approaches when working with children, to suit each individual’s needs:
Sequential Oral Sensory (SOS) Approach to Feeding: Picky Eaters and Problems Feeders.
Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital – Paediatric Feeding Workshop
Read and Grow (and Read and Grow Plus) – early literacy program for children that are either typically or atypically developing
PlayConnect – A relationship based therapy approach for Early Childhood
